About ZELTIQ™
ZELTIQ™ (pronounced Zel 'teek), founded in 2005, is a science-based medical-device company that is dedicated to the development of non-invasive procedures for the reduction of unwanted fat tissue through lipolysis. The ZELTIQ system utilizes a patented method called CryolipolysisTM; the use of precisely controlled cooling to remove fat. This method is designed to only kill fat cells without injury to the skin or other tissue that results from more invasive procedures such as liposuction. This non-surgical approach may be most suitable for patients who only need minimal fat reduction, as well as for those who are unwilling or hesitant to undergo surgery for fat removal.
Visionary Investors Meets Visionary Science
Companies are typically born from a single entrepreneur. The ZELTIQ story, however, is anything but typical.
Initial Cryolipolysis research and testing on patients was conducted by Drs. Dieter Manstein and R. Rox Anderson at The Wellman Center at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, a teaching affiliate for Harvard Medical School. This science and its potential served as the catalyst that attracted founding investors Advanced Technology Ventures (ATV) and Frazier Healthcare Ventures (FHV).
ATV is devoted to funding and helping manage the years of research and development needed to build the new ideas being created by innovators in health care and medical innovation. Since 1980, ATV has built a legacy of partnering with entrepreneurial teams at the forefront of the medical technology industry—developing ideas that lead markets and change the world.
FHV is passionate about supporting the growth of biopharma, medical device, and healthcare innovators. Since 1991, FHV has carefully built and developed a team of experts whose sole focus is on solving tomorrow's medical challenges. FHV has already invested in more than 100 successful companies, many of whom have teamed up with others in the FHV network.
The collaborative knowledge and insight of these three entities have played a significant role in ZELTIQ's efforts to develop this ground-breaking medical technology.
